A Moyer's Analysis as a Beginning Point

I can think of no better starting point to understand just how seriously threatened is our democracy than to listen to one of America's most articulate and thoughtful journalists - Bill Moyers. In this video, his address to the 2008 National Conference on Media Reform, Moyers exmines a free press as the basis of democratic states. Most of us are aware of how media has eroded, but we may not be aware of how far that erosion has damaged Americans' access to the information we need to make informed decisions. Here Moyers examines the current state of the press and suggests to jounalists and citizens alike what we can do to bring back free press. It is no less than a call to the Patriot spirit among us. It is a call to speak and write the truth, no matter what the consequences.

Well, this is PERFECT to kick this blog off, Susan. Moyers is my hero, I've always loved and admired him. The Patriot's Dream will stick with me.

Yes, I do agree, Kathy. Where is that voice, that ideal being held up? Who are the patriots today? It is so hard for people to discern through all the lies and hype, to tell who is really telling the truth. What is requires of us is to disconnect from mainstream media, to stand in the quiet, and ask ourselves, what make sense?

If Americans of all walks of life do that, republican and democrat, youth and adult, atheist and believer - if we use our god given reason - and values of liberty and common sense, of community and responsibility to generations to come - if we do that, we'll be able to rescue Liberty from the presipice of greed and individualism that grips us now.
